The Holiday Merch Deadline Nobody Tells You About

Made-to-order merch has a real December cutoff, and working backward from Christmas through shipping, production and design approval puts it earlier than most people assume.

Work backward from the 25th and the date lands in November.

Everybody knows there is a holiday cutoff. Almost nobody works out what it actually is until the week it has passed.

Made-to-order merch does not sit in a warehouse waiting. Nothing exists until somebody buys it, which is what keeps a store from carrying inventory risk. The cost of that is time, and December is the one month where time is not flexible.

Working backward

Start at the 25th and count back honestly.

Carrier deadlines come first. Ground shipping across the country needs its buffer, and mid-December is when every carrier in the country is at capacity. Whatever the published cutoff is, the week before it is the safe one.

Before shipping, production. Every order is printed, checked and packed, and December is the busiest stretch of the year for every print floor including ours. Normal turnaround is not December turnaround.

Before production, the order has to be placed, which means the store has to be live and people have to have found it. A store that opens on the 10th does not get a December.

And before all of it, design approval. This is the step that consistently runs longest, and it is the only one that is entirely on the client's side. Artwork goes back and forth, someone is travelling, a board has to look at it. A week here is common and three is not unusual.

The answer

November 1 is the safe date to have your store live. Not the date to start thinking about it, and not the date to send artwork. Live, open, and taking orders.

That gives design approval room to be slow, production room to absorb the December load, and shipping room to arrive before anyone is checking a tracking number nervously on the 23rd.

None of this is scarcity. Stores open in December and they still sell. What they lose is the part of the season where people are actually buying gifts, which is most of it.

If you want a store running for the holidays, the useful thing to do now is settle the artwork. See how storefronts work, or write to us and we will tell you honestly whether the date still works.
