Concept: Coffee shop, El Cajon

A neighborhood coffee shop dressed as the industrial park it sits in, with every photo framed as a loading bay and the type borrowed from stenciled dock lettering.

A design concept, not a client site. The name and every detail of the business it was drawn for have been replaced.

The design decisions

  • Teko, a condensed face like the lettering painted on unit doors, carries headings, nav and menu rows in uppercase, with Rethink Sans for reading text.
  • The palette is built from the setting: steel grey for the hero, a deeper steel for the visit band and bay frames, concrete for the kitchen band and dock yellow for kickers, bay signs and the primary button.
  • Each photo sits in a dock bay with a steel frame, a painted bay sign and yellow capped bumpers, and a slatted roll up door rolls away when the bay scrolls into view unless reduced motion is requested.
  • Section widths and alignments shift as you scroll, from a split steel hero to a narrow photo beside a ruled menu board, a three column kitchen band with uneven bays, and an offset pair of bays in the yard section.
