Concept: Coffee roaster and kitchen, San Diego

A neighborhood roaster and kitchen presented as one long shared table, so the menu reads like place settings friends have dropped around a wooden board.

A design concept, not a client site. The name and every detail of the business it was drawn for have been replaced.

The design decisions

  • Chunky monospaced Rubik Mono One capitals carry the headings like a painted shop sign, set against plain Karla for menu lines and body copy.
  • A sage green ground taken from the room's furniture runs through the hero and the table runner, with a warm orange accent reserved for buttons and the mobile call bar, all on a cream paper base with ink rules.
  • The menu is a wood toned board with slightly tilted placemats on either side of a dashed sage runner, with plates of food set between the mats; on phones the board collapses to a single column of mats.
  • The hero is a left aligned headline on a sage panel with the room photo at its native ratio on the right, and later sections deliberately shift width and alignment, including an uneven three photo row with staggered tops.
