Concept: Coffee roaster and cafe, San Diego
The site is a printed field guide to a roastery cafe: book spreads with running heads and a center fold, photos tipped in as captioned plates, an index of coffees, and thumb index tabs on the page edge.
A design concept, not a client site. The name and every detail of the business it was drawn for have been replaced.
The design decisions
- Spectral sets the display type and every italic guide note and caption, while Karla handles body copy, data labels and the small caps running heads.
- A pale concrete ground with near black ink, a plant green for guide notes and a terracotta accent, plus a deeper terracotta for small text, keep the palette quiet and printed.
- Each photo sits in a white paper mount with an italic caption like a plate in a guidebook, and the coffee bar menu is drawn as a laminated sheet held on a dark clipboard by a metal clip.
- Colored thumb index tabs on the right edge jump to Cafe, Menu, Origins and Visit and the current one pulls out; on smaller screens they turn into a bottom tab strip, and the hero shows today's hours computed in local time.
