Concept: Breakfast cafe, San Diego

A beach neighborhood breakfast cafe paced like a lazy late morning: one long look at a sunlit room, then the menu read slowly, then the room, the catering and the way in.

A design concept, not a client site. The name and every detail of the business it was drawn for have been replaced.

The design decisions

  • Soft, high contrast Gilda Display sets every heading like a hand lettered menu board, with Hanken Grotesk for menu items and body text.
  • A linen ground with warm ink type and dark bands, sage for the wood grain lines, and a deep sea blue as the single accent for links, focus rings and the pinned call bar.
  • The signature divider is a band of hand drawn driftwood grain lines that slide sideways as each section passes through the viewport, without shifting the layout.
  • The hero photo runs full bleed with the headline set lower left over a measured scrim; on smaller screens the copy drops beneath the photo onto solid ink so it never fights the image.
