Concept: Cafe and bakery, La Jolla
A plant filled cafe of mismatched tables and chairs, built the same way: every block sits in a slightly different container, held together by one palette so the page still reads as one room.
A design concept, not a client site. The name and every detail of the business it was drawn for have been replaced.
The design decisions
- Rozha One, high contrast and a little theatrical like a hand painted sign, sets the display type, with Figtree for reading text.
- A terracotta, leaf green and warm plaster palette taken from pots, plants and walls, with deeper versions of terracotta and green reserved for small text so it passes contrast.
- The hero sets the patio photo inside a terracotta arch with an offset green shadow beside a large headline, and the house rules below each sit in a different container: a side bar, a dashed box, a pill and a double underline, stepped in at different indents.
- The signature is a deliberately mismatched photo wall where every frame differs (heavy moulding, an oval mat, a tipped polaroid, an octagon, a double rule and a taped card), with photos kept at native ratio inside them.
