Concept: Beach cafe, Imperial Beach
A locals' beach cafe in the first hour of light: a sand colored page, a sign painted plank menu board like the one by the register, and sandwiches that regulars order by name.
A design concept, not a client site. The name and every detail of the business it was drawn for have been replaced.
The design decisions
- Shrikhand, a fat sign painter's display face, sets the huge wordmark, section heads and the sandwich names, with rounded Nunito Sans for body, labels and the small print on the board.
- Sand is the page ground, a deep sea ink paints the menu board and text, sea foam fills the smoothie section and the board lettering, and a burnt orange accent marks the board's category heads and the hours line.
- The menu is a full width ink plank board with seams, nail heads in the corners, dotted leaders and a size grid for drinks, and the sandwich section then letters each name even larger beside its photo, alternating left and right.
- The hero runs the wordmark nearly edge to edge on the left with a square photo in the right column, stacking full width under the type on phones, where a pinned call bar stays at the bottom.
